2017 DADE CITY HISTORIC ORNAMENT HAS ARRIVED !!!
The Florida Telephone Corporation Building --- Currently “A Matter of Taste” Restaurant
Thirty years after Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, the Pasco County Telephone Corporation organized with 16 lines. By 1910, the directory listed 135 numbers for the exchange. Clarence Griffin, the President and General Manager of the company, housed the exchange in his local drug store.
Telephone pioneer Otto Wettstein Jr., with financial assistance of Elliot Edge of Groveland, FL. came to Dade City and in 1916 purchased Griffin’s company. Wettstein continued to acquire telephone exchanges throughout Florida. In 1925, he merged his 28 exchanges into the Florida Telephone Corporation.
Mr. Wettstein constructed a two story Mediterranean Revival building on 7th Street in Dade City to house the telephone company. The building completed in 1925 and named the Florida Telephone Corporation Building. The new space provided much improved service for the overloaded exchange located in Mr. Griffin’s drug store.
For the remaining history on this building in downtown Dade City, you can purchase this beautiful ornament from a member or the Dade City Chamber of Commerce.
